Septic System GraphicWhat is it?
A septic system is a subsurface sewage disposal system that disposes of water generated by occupants of a building.  A successful septic system disperses the water into the soils across the property without causing an adverse effect on ground water.

Why Should You Care?
Improperly maintained septic systems can result in health risks for humans and cause water quality problems. Incomplete treatment of wastewater can result in the spread of hepatitis, dysentery, and other diseases caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites in the wastewater.
High levels of nitrate in surface and groundwater can also result from inadequately maintained septic systems.

What Can You Do?
Maintenance your septic system regularly, which includes, but is not limited to, having a professional inspect and pump your system every 3 years. In new developments check that the septic is located an appropriate distance from your well. Be aware of what should not be flushed down your toilet, including some cleansers.
