A Tree City, USA town since 2001, East Windsor Township has embarked on numerous projects to preserve open space, protect historic landmarks, protect water quality, and encourage public participation in events and issues in the town.  Some of these accomplishments include:

  • Creating and adopting a Stream Corridor Ordinance that protects water quality in the township
  • Creating the Bear Brook Greenway with Washington Township in Mercer County. This is one project that implements some of the Township’s goals for open space planning
  • Implementing their Open Space Plan through a $2.5 million Green Acres Grant
  • Acquiring 200 acres in open space in 2002 alone
  • Protecting the Rescarrick-Moore House by dismantling it for storage. The township is looking for a proper site for its permanent residence.
  • Publishing a book on local historic landmarks, which is available on the Township’s web-site
  • Establishing goals for the Historic Preservation Committee, which include recording and displaying archaeological finds from One Mile Road dig sites and distributing a children’s education package entitled “A Kid’s History of Early East Windsor”.

MUNICIPAL ASSESSMENT

To further these efforts, East Windsor Township entered into the Association’s Program for Municipal Excellence in February 2001.  We are working with the Township on the various land use planning strategies they identified in their assessment.  The Association responded to East Windsor’s request for information by providing the township with a copy of our Stormwater Primer, a Project Turtle Kit and other River Friendly information, and our Wellhead Ordinance Implementation Package.

A full description of the work completed in East Windsor Township can be found in East Windsor’s Municipal Assessment report entitled “Taking the Next Step”.  This report is a document for municipal officials to use now and into the future.  It lays out options to enhance programs or policies already on the books in East Windsor Township and highlights work completed in the township.  Go to the full report to read about the 14 subjects assessed in the township or for a quick glimpse of the report, you can also view the Executive Summary.
