Established in 1846, East Amwell Township is located at the southeastern edge of Hunterdon County, adjacent to Mercer and Somerset Counties. East Amwell is a rural and farming community known for its commitment to the preservation of farms and open space. It is a “right to farm” township, which protects farming activities and allows for all township residents to be aware and educated about farming in the community. The Township is also home to the village of Ringoes, one of the oldest settlements in Hunterdon County.
Some of East Amwell’s accomplishments include:
- Preserving Farmland through the Township’s active Farmland and Open Space Preservation Committee. The Committee successfully seeks preservation opportunities, advises the Township Committee, educates residents about the Township’s preservation program, and maintains an inventory of preserved lands and conservation easements.
- Preserving Open Space with the intent to “Expand and implement the Greenways Plan so that it links environmentally sensitive areas, historic places, existing State, County, and Municipal land holdings and provides for opportunities for a network of open space.” (1993 Master Plan). The Township has recently acquired farmland that will be used as a public park. The plans for the newly acquired Clawson Park include restoring the old farmhouse for use as a public museum.
- Protecting areas with environmental constraints by identifying five districts in the Land Use Plan in order to “preserve as much as possible those existing development patterns and traditions” (1993 Master Plan). Environmentally sensitive areas such as, the Sourland Mountain and Amwell Valley Districts have also been protected through Land Use Plan Amendments and zoning.
- Preserving Historic resources, the Historic Preservation Committee recently completed a map of the Township’ s historic bridges and has successfully worked to include the Village of Ringoes, and the Hamlets of Linvale/Snydertown/New Castle and Wertsville on the National Register of Historic Places.
